Shanghai上海· /

China's global megacity where art-deco riverside meets futuristic skyline.

Shanghai is the easiest landing point for first-time visitors — a polyglot, with a 24/7 rhythm, world-class transit and a coffee scene that rivals anywhere on the planet.

The Huangpu River splits the city in two — the colonial-era Bund on one side, the rocketing towers of Pudong on the other. In between, leafy plane-tree streets in the reward slow walking, and its makes spring and autumn the sweet spots for visiting.

Culture & Traditions

Shikumen Lane Life

Shanghai's signature stone-gate row houses blend Chinese courtyards with Western terrace architecture — peek down the narrow longtang lanes off Tianzifang and Xintiandi to see laundry and birdcages overhead.

Haipai Cuisine

A century-old "sea-style" cooking school that absorbed Cantonese, Western and Japanese techniques. Try sheng jian bao (pan-fried soup dumplings), drunken crab and red-braised pork belly.

Jazz Age Heritage

Shanghai was Asia's jazz capital in the 1930s. The Peace Hotel still hosts its octogenarian Old Jazz Band, and JZ Club in Xuhui keeps the late-night swing alive.

Magnolia City Identity

The white magnolia is Shanghai's municipal flower and a recurring motif in city branding, public art and the metro signage you'll see everywhere.

Shanghainese Dialect

A Wu-Chinese variety unintelligible to Mandarin speakers. Locals slip into "Shanghai-hua" at home and in older neighborhoods — a small but proud identity marker.
