Confucian Heartland

Confucius was born in Qufu in 551 BC and his descendants have lived there continuously since. The 78th-generation grandson moved to Taiwan in 1949 but the family compound remains.

Mt Tai's Feng Shan Rites

From Qin Shihuang to the Qing emperors, every dynasty made its case for legitimacy by climbing Mount Tai and performing the rite of Feng (sky) and Shan (earth) sacrifice.

Lu Cuisine

The oldest of China's eight regional cuisines — the imperial-kitchen style. Sweet-and-sour Yellow River carp, braised sea cucumber and "Confucian banquet" feasts.

German colonists founded the brewery in 1903. Today every Qingdao street corner has plastic-bag draft pours (sold by the liter), and the beer festival each August rivals Oktoberfest.
