Inner Mongolia内蒙古·

Endless grasslands, Gobi dunes, and Mongol horseback heritage.

The region's history is defined by the legacy of the Mongol Empire, the Silk Road, and its role as a between China, Russia, and Mongolia.

Culture & Traditions

Naadam Festival

Each July, Mongol communities hold the "three manly games" — wrestling, horse racing and archery. Combined with throat-singing concerts under the stars, it's the must-time-it event of the year.

Yurt Hospitality

A traditional Mongol welcome involves three bowls of milk tea, hada (blue ceremonial scarves) and sometimes a sheep killed in honor of guests — at minimum a bowl of fermented mare's milk.

Mongolian Throat Singing

Khöömei — the technique of producing two simultaneous pitches with one voice — is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. Hohhot's Saihan Theatre hosts evening shows.

Hot-Pot Birthplace

Inner Mongolia is widely credited as the home of Chinese mutton hot pot — copper pots, lean lamb sliced paper-thin, sesame-and-fermented-tofu dipping sauce, no spice required.

Bow & Saddle Heritage

From Genghis Khan's bowmen to today's grassland riders, horsemanship is a living part of life here. Mid-summer horse races at Xilingol attract thousands of competitors and tens of thousands of fans.
