Yunnan is best planned as a route. The classic first-time corridor moves from Kunming to Dali, Lijiang, and sometimes Shangri-La, with landscapes and altitude changing as you go north.
Why route order matters
Starting in Kunming and moving north helps keep the trip logical. Kunming is the transport gateway. Dali gives you lake, old-town, and Cangshan scenery. Lijiang adds Naxi culture, old-town lanes, and mountain access. Shangri-La is higher, colder, and more Tibetan-influenced.
Because altitude rises along the route, do not rush directly to the highest point if you are sensitive to elevation.
A realistic 8-day plan
Day 1: Arrive in Kunming. Keep the day simple and prepare for train travel.
Days 2-3: Dali. Explore the old town, Erhai Lake area, and a slower cultural or lake route.
Days 4-5: Lijiang. Use one day for the old town and nearby areas, and one day for a mountain or gorge-related experience if weather and tickets work.
Days 6-7: Shangri-La. Visit a monastery, old town, lake, or grassland area, depending on season and altitude comfort.
Day 8: Return or continue. Build a buffer for long transfers.
Transport planning
High-speed and intercity rail have made the Yunnan corridor easier, but station names, train times, and passport ticketing still matter. Book popular trains early in holiday periods and keep your passport accessible.
What makes Yunnan different
Yunnan is less about one blockbuster site and more about variety: minority cultures, old towns, lakes, mountains, food, and slower travel. English can be limited outside tourist businesses, so download translation tools and keep addresses in Chinese.
Common mistakes
Do not treat Yunnan like a fast city checklist. Do not ignore altitude in Shangri-La. Do not carry huge luggage through old-town stone streets if your hotel is far from vehicle access.
Best strategy
Give each stop a clear role: Kunming for arrival, Dali for slow scenery, Lijiang for culture and mountains, Shangri-La for highland atmosphere. Yunnan rewards travelers who move steadily rather than aggressively.
