Shanghai Metro is often the easiest way to cross the city. It is extensive, frequent, and connected to major districts, railway stations, and both airport areas through metro or linked services.
Fares and tickets
Shanghai Metro uses distance-based fares. Official guidance states that fares start at 3 yuan for trips under 6 kilometers, with additional charges as distance increases. Check the station fare screen or official metro tools for your exact route.
Ways to pay
Metro Daduhui app
Shanghai Metro Daduhui is a dedicated metro app. If you use supported mobile payment services, you can generate a QR code for entry and exit. Official guidance also notes support paths for international passengers through linked card services.
Single ticket
A single ticket is useful when you do not want to set up an app immediately. Buy it at ticket vending machines or service counters, then insert or tap it according to station instructions.
Public Transportation Card
The Shanghai Public Transportation Card works across metro lines and can be a reliable backup for frequent rides. It can also reduce friction when your phone battery or app is unavailable.
Suishenxing app
Suishenxing, also known as SH MaaS, can provide an all-in-one code for buses, ferries, and subway lines. Official guidance says it supports several payment services and can link international bank cards including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club, and JCB.
Day passes
Shanghai Metro offers one-day and three-day pass options. A one-day pass is valid for unlimited metro rides within 24 hours from first use, excluding the maglev. A three-day pass is valid for 72 hours from first use, also excluding the maglev.
Airport and rail connections
Metro Line 2 is important for many visitors because it links key downtown areas with Pudong and Hongqiao connections. For Pudong Airport, compare Line 2, maglev plus metro, taxi, and airport link options based on luggage, time, and arrival hour.
Rush-hour advice
Avoid large luggage during peak commute times when possible. Stand to the side of escalators and let passengers exit before boarding. Keep your ticket, card, or QR code ready for both entry and exit gates.
When to ask staff
Ask station staff if your card is declined, your QR code does not scan, or you are unsure which pass fits your route. Service centers are usually the fastest way to solve ticketing problems without blocking the gate.
