Zhejiang University is one of Hangzhou's most famous universities, but it is not a single tourist attraction with one entrance. It operates one main campus and several satellite locations, so the first rule is simple: confirm which campus you want before you start your trip.
Choose the right campus first
Zijingang Campus
Zijingang is the main campus in northwest Hangzhou. Zhejiang University's official site lists it at 866 Yuhangtang Road and describes it as the main campus where first- and second-year undergraduates study, with administrative offices for many schools and colleges. For most visitors who simply want to see the modern main campus, this is usually the campus to search for.
Yuquan Campus
Yuquan Campus is listed by Zhejiang University at 38 Zheda Road. The university describes it as about 8 km from Zijingang and within walking distance of West Lake and Hangzhou Botanical Garden. Choose Yuquan if you want to combine a university stop with a West Lake or botanical garden day.
Other ZJU locations in Hangzhou
ZJU also lists Xixi Campus, Huajiachi Campus, and Zhijiang Campus in Hangzhou, plus Zhoushan and Haining locations outside central Hangzhou. These can be interesting if you have a specific academic, architectural, or personal reason to go, but they are not interchangeable with Zijingang or Yuquan.
Getting there by metro and local transport
Use the official Hangzhou Metro map before departure because routes, station exits, and transfer advice can change.
For Zijingang Campus, search the metro map for the Zijingang campus area and plan the final walk by the exact gate or building name. For Yuquan Campus, plan around the West Lake, Huanglong, or Botanical Garden side of the city, then use walking, taxi, or ride-hailing for the final approach if needed.
If you are coming from a railway station, airport, or a hotel across town, metro is usually the most predictable first leg. If you are carrying luggage, arriving late, or traveling in heavy rain, a taxi or ride-hailing trip for the final section may be easier than changing lines and walking across campus roads.
A simple half-day plan
If you want a practical ZJU visit without overpacking the day, choose one campus and one nearby add-on.
For a modern-campus plan, go to Zijingang, walk around public outdoor areas if access rules allow, then continue to a nearby shopping or dining area.
For a classic Hangzhou plan, visit Yuquan Campus first, then continue toward Hangzhou Botanical Garden or the northwest side of West Lake. This makes better geographic sense than trying to visit Zijingang, Yuquan, and West Lake in one tight afternoon.
Campus visit etiquette
ZJU is a working university, not a theme park. Do not assume that academic buildings, dormitories, libraries, labs, or sports facilities are open to casual visitors. Follow gate instructions, security guidance, posted signs, and any reservation or ID requirements in effect on the day.
Bring your passport or a clear passport copy in case identity information is requested. If you are visiting someone at the university, ask them for the exact campus, gate, building name, and current visitor procedure before you travel.
What to check before you go
- Exact campus name: Zijingang, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Haining, or Zhoushan.
- Exact address or gate, especially if meeting a student, professor, or office.
- Current campus access rules on official ZJU pages or through your host.
- Current metro route and station exits on the official Hangzhou Metro map.
- Weather, because Hangzhou rain or summer heat can make long walks less comfortable.
Best strategy
For most travelers, choose Zijingang if your goal is to see the main modern campus, and choose Yuquan if you want a university stop connected to West Lake sightseeing. Keep the plan flexible, verify current access before entering, and avoid building your day around unsupported assumptions about which buildings are open.
