Guilin and Yangshuo are famous for karst peaks, rivers, caves, and countryside scenes that look different from China's big cities. For many travelers, this is the nature-focused break in a China itinerary.

Understand the route

The classic landscape route follows the Li River from Guilin toward Yangshuo. The official Li River scenic area describes the 83-kilometer Guilin-to-Yangshuo section as the essence of the scenery. Most travelers should think in terms of a route, not a single viewpoint.

Cruise or shorter river experience

A Li River cruise is the classic choice and usually takes a large part of the day. It is useful if you want a relaxed, scenic transfer from Guilin toward Yangshuo. Shorter river or raft-style experiences can feel more intimate, but availability and rules can vary by section and season.

Before booking, confirm departure pier, arrival point, luggage handling, passport requirements, and whether the trip is one-way.

Where to stay

Guilin is useful for airport, rail, and cruise logistics. Yangshuo is better if you want slower countryside time, biking, walking, smaller guesthouses, and karst views around town. A first trip often works well with one night in Guilin and one or two nights in Yangshuo.

A simple two- or three-day plan

Day 1: Arrive in Guilin, stay central, and keep the day light.

Day 2: Take the Li River route toward Yangshuo, then settle in and walk around town.

Day 3: Use Yangshuo for countryside scenery, a bike route, a viewpoint, or a slower river experience.

Practical cautions

Weather affects visibility and river experiences. Holiday crowds can change the mood quickly. Some scenic experiences are easier with local help if you do not speak Chinese, especially when combining transport, tickets, and countryside routes.

Best strategy

Do not rush Guilin and Yangshuo as a one-photo stop. Let the river route carry one day, then use Yangshuo for slower scenery.
