Essential Apps for Traveling in China

Your smartphone is your most powerful travel tool in China. The right apps will help you communicate, navigate, pay, and eat — often better than any guidebook. Download and set up these apps before you arrive, because some app stores and websites are blocked by the Great Firewall.

Communication

WeChat (微信)

WeChat is not just a messaging app — it is the Swiss army knife of daily life in China.

  • Messaging: Text, voice messages, video calls — everyone in China uses WeChat.
  • Payments: WeChat Pay is accepted nearly everywhere.
  • Mini Programs: Order food, book hotels, hail taxis — all without leaving the app.
  • Moments: A social-media feed; great for connecting with locals.

Tip: Add friends by scanning their QR code. Chinese people rarely share phone numbers; WeChat is the default.

Navigation

Baidu Maps (百度地图) / Amap (高德地图)

Google Maps does not work well in China (even with a VPN, map data is inaccurate due to coordinate offsets).

  • Baidu Maps has a partial English interface and excellent transit directions.
  • Amap (Gaode) is preferred by locals; more accurate real-time traffic data.
  • Both show bus/metro routes, walking paths, and nearby restaurants.

Tip: Search for destinations in Chinese characters for the most accurate results. Copy-paste from your translation app.

Payments

Alipay (支付宝)

The other half of China's mobile-payment duopoly:

  • Tour Pass feature for international tourists — bind your foreign card and top up in CNY.
  • Pay at shops, restaurants, vending machines, and even street vendors.
  • In-app mini programs for metro tickets, bike sharing, and more.

Transportation

DiDi (滴滴出行)

China's dominant ride-hailing app:

  • English interface available in the international version.
  • Fare estimates before booking; no haggling with drivers.
  • Options: Express (economy), Premier (comfort), Luxe (premium).

12306 (铁路12306)

The official app for booking China's high-speed rail tickets:

  • Register with your passport number.
  • English support has improved significantly.
  • E-tickets — just swipe your passport at the gate, no paper ticket needed.

Metro Apps

Most cities have their own metro app, but you can also use Alipay's transit QR code feature, which works across dozens of cities — no need to buy tokens.

Food & Delivery

Meituan (美团)

The everything-app for food:

  • Restaurant discovery: Browse menus, ratings, and photos.
  • Food delivery: Order from thousands of restaurants to your hotel.
  • Group deals: Discounted meals and experiences.

Ele.me (饿了么)

Alipay's integrated food-delivery service:

  • Accessible directly from the Alipay app (no separate download).
  • Similar restaurant selection to Meituan.

Travel Booking

Trip.com (携程 / Ctrip)

The go-to platform for:

  • Hotels (widest selection in China, English interface).
  • Flights (domestic and international).
  • Train tickets (easier than 12306 for foreigners).
  • Attraction tickets with skip-the-line options.

Translation

Google Translate / Apple Translate

  • Download the Chinese language pack for offline use (critical when your VPN drops).
  • Camera translation is a lifesaver for menus and signs.
  • Conversation mode for real-time two-way translation.

Pleco

The best Chinese–English dictionary app:

  • Handwriting recognition — draw the character you see and get instant translation.
  • Optical character reader (OCR) for signs and menus.
  • Free with optional paid add-ons.

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Download and register WeChat; add a payment method.
  • Set up Alipay Tour Pass and load funds.
  • Install Baidu Maps or Amap.
  • Download DiDi (international version).
  • Install a reliable VPN and test it.
  • Download offline language packs for Google Translate.
  • Register on 12306 if you plan to take trains.
