Chengdu is one of China's easiest cities to enjoy slowly. For many international visitors, the first image is pandas. The better version of the trip adds tea houses, Sichuan food, parks, old streets, and enough time to move at Chengdu's natural pace.
Start with the Chengdu Panda Base
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the city's headline attraction. Its official ticket guidance says visitors should use online real-name reservations and enter with the original valid ID used during reservation. For international travelers, that usually means planning around your passport details and checking the current booking channel before you go.
Visit early if pandas are the main reason for your trip, and avoid stacking too many other major stops after the base. The site can involve a lot of walking, crowds, and waiting during popular periods.
Add one slow city experience
After the panda base, choose a slower experience rather than turning the day into a checklist. Good Chengdu themes include a tea house, People's Park, Kuanzhai-style historic lanes, Jinli/Wuhou-area culture, or a hotpot dinner. The point is to feel Chengdu's relaxed rhythm, not just collect landmarks.
Food strategy
Chengdu food is a major reason to visit. Hotpot is famous, but it can be spicy and intense for first-timers. Start with a restaurant that can explain spice levels, or order a split pot if available. Also try snacks, noodles, dumplings, and tea house sweets if you want variety.
If you have allergies, dietary restrictions, or low spice tolerance, prepare translations in advance. Menus and sauces can be difficult to decode quickly.
How many days to stay
Two days works for pandas plus city highlights. Three days lets you add museums, temples, food neighborhoods, or a slower tea culture day. More time allows side trips such as Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain, or Leshan, but each deserves careful transport planning.
Transport and payment
Use metro for predictable city movement and ride-hailing or taxis for early panda-base starts, luggage, or late evenings. Set up mobile payment before arrival and keep backup cash and a card. Save your hotel address in Chinese for drivers.
Reservation cautions
The official Panda Base guidance includes reservation windows, entry times, and authorized platforms, but details can change. Always check the official page before relying on a third-party summary. For holidays, book earlier and expect heavier crowds.
Best version of the trip
Build Chengdu around one major attraction per half day, then leave room for tea, food, and wandering. Chengdu's appeal is strongest when you stop trying to rush it.
